In Swahili, Amani means peace. But in the forests of southwestern Uganda, peace between people and gorillas has always been more complicated than the word suggests. For generations, the Batwa lived within the forest alongside its wildlife.
Today, conservation seeks a different kind of coexistence—one that protects the gorillas while also remembering the people whose lives were once inseparable from this forest.
