Chhaya means “shadow” in Sanskrit. In Hindu tradition, Chhāyā is itself personified as a shadow, associated with the sun god Surya. The name seems especially fitting for a tiger—a creature whose power often lies in remaining unseen.
In India's forests, the tiger can be present long before it becomes visible, its stripes dissolving into the shadows of the forest.
