Ongwe is the Otjiherero word for leopard, but the word carries echoes beyond the animal itself. In Herero praise traditions, the leopard has been associated with courage and warrior identity; leopard skin formed part of the dress of exceptionally brave warriors.
The animal became more than a predator—it became a metaphor for human qualities such as strength, courage and fierce character.
