There is no shortcut across Namibia's dry country. Elephants may walk extraordinary distances between food and water, following routes that can remain useful for generations.
In the late 1990s, a bull known as Voortrekker—“first walker”—led elephants south into the Ugab River, helping establish herds in an area from which they had disappeared. For Namibia's elephants, survival has always been a long road.
